PRESS RELEASE
RFH/071/24
4 November 2024
After two years of classroom study and practical testing, the first cohort of students has graduated as Ireland’s latest HGV drivers – the first to complete the nationally-recognised Commercial Driver Apprenticeship, which started in September 2022.
Aidan Flynn, Chairperson of the Transport Operations & Commercial Driving Apprenticeship and Chief Executive of FTA Ireland, the group which represents all sectors of the logistics industry, says the new apprenticeship “makes a huge difference to recruitment.”
“This apprenticeship serves as a catalyst to attract young people, particularly women, into our industry to support business growth at a time when demand for their skills has never been higher,” he explains. “This academic qualification offers credibility and value to the profession of driving and supports career progression opportunities within the workforce. The first graduates of the programme, who have attained a Higher Certificate in Transport Operations and Commercial Driving as well as their CE Driving Licence and Driver CPC, are trailblazers and their families and employers should be justifiably proud of their achievements.
“Apprenticeships give students the opportunity to earn while they learn, undertaking practical as well as classroom sessions to ensure they are set fair for the world of work from their graduation. This group of graduates has excelled in demonstrating how great the opportunities are in our industry and will be in high demand from employers who have experienced a shortage of skilled drivers over many years.”
“This apprenticeship programme supports Ireland’s ambitions to be leaders in supply chain and logistics. We hope that the graduates of today, thrive in their chosen profession, and continue to promote the highest standards of professionalism and road safety. With influences from decarbonisation to technology affecting our industry every day, the graduates are great ambassadors for our sector and have an exciting future in commercial driving.”
