Decarbonising Forestry – Log Haulage Ireland 2026

This report sets out a practical roadmap for reducing emissions from Ireland’s forestry log haulage sector. It identifies the key actions required, the stakeholders needed to deliver change, and the measures that will track progress—providing a clear, structured pathway from ambition to implementation.
Project Introduction
This report builds on the Decarbonising the Road Freight Sector report published by FTA Ireland in 2024, narrowing the focus to the specific challenges and opportunities within forestry log haulage. Rather than revisiting the case for change, it concentrates on how decarbonisation can be delivered in practice for heavy-duty vehicles operating in this unique and demanding sector.
Developed through collaboration across a wide range of industry stakeholders—including hauliers, forestry companies, energy providers and policymakers—it sets out a shared understanding of the current landscape and the pathway forward. The report establishes a clear operational baseline and identifies the actions, milestones and partnerships required to enable progress.
At its core, this work is about turning ambition into delivery: aligning real-world operations with practical solutions and ensuring that the transition to lower-emission log haulage is achievable, measurable and scalable across the sector.
