Climate Act note
Transport accounts for approximately 20% of Ireland’s greenhouse has (GHG) emissions. Road transport is responsible for 96% of those GHG emissions and it is also directly responsible for a range of air pollutants that negatively impacts both human health and the environment.
The Climate Actions & Low Carbon Development Act 2021 the CAP21 is the action plan set by each government, in meeting EU carbon reductions targets set out in the EU Green Deal https://ec.europa.eu/info/strategy/priorities-2019-2024/european-green-deal_en. The European Commission adopted a set of proposals to make the EU’s climate, energy, transport and taxation policies fit for reducing net greenhouse gas emissions by at least 55% by 2030, compared to 1990 levels. Today, transport emissions represent around 25% of the EU’s total greenhouse gas emissions and these emissions have increased over recent years.
