PRESS RELEASE
13 APRIL 2026
Following participation in intensive Government-led talks over recent days, business group FTA Ireland is optimistic that a solution can be found to address the escalating impact of rising fuel costs and the wider energy crisis on the transport and logistics sector.
The discussions, which have involved recognised representative bodies across transport, haulage and related sectors, focused on the significant operational and commercial pressures now facing operators as a result of volatility in global energy markets. FTA Ireland used the opportunity to clearly communicate the challenges being experienced by its members and to advocate for practical, equitable and targeted supports.
“Freight and logistics operators are at the frontline of the economy, ensuring the delivery of fuel, food, pharmaceuticals and essential goods every day,” said Niall Cotton, Chief Executive of FTA Ireland. “Our sector operates on tight margins, and sustained fuel price volatility presents an immediate and serious challenge to operational viability and supply chain continuity.”
The talks took place against the backdrop of protests related to rising costs. FTA Ireland recognises the right to peaceful protest; however, it has consistently highlighted that disruption to critical transport infrastructure, ports and fuel distribution points risks compounding pressures on businesses and communities nationwide.
“Stability and certainty are urgently required,” continued Cotton. “Disruption to fuel supply and transport routes places additional strain on an already stretched system and risks undermining essential services. Constructive engagement remains the most effective route to meaningful solutions.”
During the discussions, Government outlined a proposed framework for a Transport Fuel Support Scheme as part of its response to the current crisis. While subject to finalisation and ongoing cross‑sectoral engagement, the framework represents tangible progress and demonstrates a clear commitment to supporting transport operators through the current challenges.
“FTA Ireland welcomes the constructive engagement and the willingness shown by Government and other stakeholders to work diligently towards workable and balanced outcomes,” said Cotton. “We hope and expect that the measures now being progressed will go a long way towards assisting operators, supporting de‑escalation, and restoring stability to the sector.”
FTA Ireland will remain closely engaged in ongoing discussions and will continue to represent the interests of its members as further detail emerges.
